The Evil C Word and American Political Discourse

A writer who I enjoyed very much (though not often enough), Cathy Seipp passed away yesterday.  You can read several great tributes to her at:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,260268,00.html (from liberal dem Susan Estrich)
http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=MWNmNWM1NTU0Zjg0MDJkZjg2ODkwOTdhZGI0OTFiNWE= (from Kathryn Jean Lopez, On-line editor of NRO)

I mention this because Cathy had friends across the political spectrum.  Then today we hear that the wife of John Edwards, Elizabeth, has been diagnosed with a recurrence of her cancer.  I hate cancer.  I have lost too many friends to it.  And to their credit many of the right are already praying for her, and encouraging others to do liekwise.  It points out that politics, while important, and ideology, while important, should not create barriers between us.  Of course our political viewpoints do matter, but that does not mean that we cannot be friends, go out for a pint after debates, and talk about each other as human beings?

Cathy’s life and the response from places like NRO to Elizabeth Edward’s cancer are reminder to us that there are things more important than politics - like friendship, health, and love.
