On the Nightstand…What the Roving Theologian is Reading

I love it when people ask me what I am reading. It happens more and more these days (remember to send emails to ).  I think most people think I spend all my time reading dark and dingy German theology (well, I do, but only
til this thesis is done). So...here is what is currently on the nightstand.

The Bible (duh)

Aquinas’s Shorter Summa: St. Thomas’s Own Concise Version of His Summa Theologica by Thomas Aquinas
I don’t think anyone has ever really read all of Aquinas’ Summa Theologica. But this is a great compend that TA developed himself.

Named God and the Question of Being: A Trinitarian Theo-Ontology Stanley J. Grenz
Stan was a friend and a mentor, and probably the best pure evangelical theologian America produced in last half of the 20th Century (certainly
the most prolific).  This is not light reading but important reading.

The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman
This is personal favourite right now.  I love to read and talk globalization, and Friedman has a positive but also realistic view of it.  Also, this book is
very manageable for people without a degree in economics.  I will write a review in the coming days.

Little Ice Age: How Climate Made History 1300-1850 by Brian Fagan
I saw the History Channel special on this and became very interested.  I am still a skeptic on global warming, but think we should take better care of the earth regardless.  But this book does a great job of detailing how the ice age that came during the end of the Middle Ages changed Europe forever.

Jawbreaker: The Attack on Bin Laden and Al Qaeda: A Personal Account by the CIA’s Key Field Commander by Gary Bernsten
I listened to the abridged version of this book on Audible three times and decided I needed to read the full thing. Its a captivating account (though clearly the author does not suffer from self-confidence issues) of the first days of the war in Afghanistan.  I only wish the redacted portions were printed.

Transformation: How Glocal Churches Transform Lives and the World by Bob Roberts
This is the newest book to his my nightstand, but so far it is an intersting discussion of the changes that must happen in evangelical Christian churches to tackle the challenges of a world of globalism, urbanism and other social trends.
