May’s Winner for Most Inane Comment of the Month - Ian McKellen

I know, its only May 19th, but the winner for this month’s most inane comment is clear without having to wait for another couple of weeks.  I usually give this award to a conservative, because, being one (of a sort) I expect much better from conservatives. But this time, Ian said something so inane, so out to lunch, that he was just begging for the award.

No, it was not his comment that the Bible should have a warning label that it is fiction. That is a fair comment, for someonen who finds no truth in the Bible.  Sir Ian is gay, and in his mind, Christianity is an oppressor of gays.  Okay, while I strongly disagree, that is not all that stupid of a comment.  But this one…

from the Thursday Daily Telegraph (London) article:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/05/18/wcannes18.xml

takes the cake for inaneness:

Sir Ian said he had been convinced by the argument that Jesus had married. He joked: “I thought that was the absolute truth - that Jesus was not gay.”

He added that he was surprised by the opposition to the film whereas the book had not attracted such controversy.

“Is that because readers can be trusted to have minds, whereas people who see movies are the mindless masses who need to be protected?

I know Sir Ian was stuck down in New Zealand for a while for the filming of LOTR, but has he been off the planet since 2003?  The book version of The Da Vinci Code has spurred more anger, more controversy, more animous (and more counter books) than any other book I know of in the past decade.  The book is, in my professional opinion (as a theologian) complete hoohey, but a decedent read.  But to say that its just the movie that is controversial????  Come on Ian.  Get a cup of coffee, go to the local Blackwell’s Bookstore, and check out the controversy that the book has generated.

Inane?  The award goes to Sir Ian and his prize should be a weekend alone with Pat Robertson and all the book of The Left Behind Series.
