A Brit who Gets America
I have often been hard on the British for their failure to really understand our nation. Well, lets applaud someone who does.
Let me say first off, that I am no “Love it or Leave it” American. I love my country, but I am willing to be a prophetic voice against it when necessary. We as a nation have done a lot of evil (slavery, destruction of the Native Americans, turning our back on genocide in Germany, Cambodia and Rwanda). On the whole though, I think we are a force for good in the world when we want to be, and I echo Lincoln’s words (and here, I admit I am more patriot then theologian) that we can and must be “the last best hope for goodness on earth.”
So, I am pro-American, maybe not as much as other conservatives, but far more than many. So when I read this editorial, I had to post to it. Andrew Grimson understands that American by and large die (in war) for liberty, not for personal gain. Except for the Mexican-American War and the Spanish-American War (both fought in our nations teenagehood and during an era of wars against armies, not nations) we don’t fight wars for personal gain but for the sake of liberty. People, realize that our Iraq War has not and will not be a war for oil, but (whatever it may have been at the beginning) is now a war for democratic hope. Anyways, I link to Grimson’s article with pleasure.
