Latest Winner of the Pat Robertson Stupidest Thing Said This Month is…Pat Robertson

He’s at it again.  Pat, just go back to praying for people over the air and funding your flying hospital

Perhaps the “Stupidest Thing Said This Month” award should just by named the Pat Robertson Foot and Mouth Disease Award.  Can the man not see an event without proclaiming the “wrath of God” upon the event.

There is a part of my mind that keeps replaying, with the voice from those annoying airport announcements: “Pat Robertson, Pat Robertson, please pick up the white courtesy phone…your 15 minutes of fame are up.”

As I have said before, I do have a soft spot in my heart for the guy.  He seems amiable enough, and I do believe that he has done some good things.  But…

1) Saying that Prime Minister Sharon’s stroke is the judgement of God on him for kicking out the settlers out of the West Bank is just loony.
2) Are we to assume that Pat’s prostate cancer some years back was God’s judgement for his taking advantage of the poor in his diamond mines?
3) He does not, nor has he ever spoken for a) all Christians b) all evangelicals c) the religious right or d) Republicans.
4) There are many good, card-carrying Evangelicals (myself included), that while defending Israel’s right of existence and self-protection, are pro-Palestinian.
5) Christian Zionism can be dangerous, and it leads Pat to assume that any effort made by Israel, as Sharon did in 2005, to create the space for peace by giving to the Palestinians lands that according to the original 1948 Charter for Israel were Palestinian lands is heresy and idolatry on the order of setting up a Golden Calf.

In the words of Monte Python, “Will you shut up, Shut up.”

Pat, time to look for a graceful exit stage right and hand over the reigns of the 700 Club to someone who can tell the difference between the voice of God and the voice of their own biases.
